theater music. let’s talk about it.

let’s end the stigma. theater music is good. i could actually listen to it all day, i’m keeping it real here. there is nothing like a good show tune Honestly. you just have to find the right songs.

some of my favorite musicals are

Six by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow

rent by Jonathan Larson

dear evan hansen by Steven Levenson

newsies by Harvey Fierstein

aladdin by Chad Beguelin

hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda

wicked by Winnie Holzman

we just need to give it more credit, there is so much negativity on being a band kid but whoooo carreeesss, a good song will end up in my playlist, no matter where its from. quite honestly, i wish i knew how to sing or play an instrument well, it’s actually on my bucket list! it’s such a fun and cool talent to have and it teaches you so much like how to work with a group if you play in an ensemble and it helps lots of people grow fundamentally.

let’s also talk about how relatable some of these songs are too. waving through a window (dear evan hansen/steven levenson). oh that’s blasting in the car with the windows all the way down and i willllll be hitting those high notes.

there is something about the storytelling within the broadway show tune. it is unlike any other. you can relate it to your own life or just go along with the story that was written. the feeling of sentiment in heart of stone from six (six/ lucy moss and toby marlow). like wow. she is me, i am her. and the fact that they are trained for this. you could give me as many lessons as you possibly could and i would never reach that level of talent, it is truly amazing.

i think it really goes back to my childhood. my brother is now a music teacher and my family would see broadway shows every year right around christmas time. we always made a day out of it and it was so memorable even as i get older. off broadway and other theater productions are so fun to see too and much less expensive. i just think there is so much emotion in these songs, nonfictional or not. we need to start giving it more respect.

can we as a society start enjoying theater openly. please.
